Kinesthetic Awareness

Understanding and sensing where your body is in an open space is called kinaesthetic awareness. This is a key skill for all levels of golfers.

Developing this skill will enhance your ability to improve your ball striking technique, improving power and efficiency of movement.

As your senses heighten your body positioning and muscle sequencing will improve.

Combine this with a sound technique and you will raise your consistency of performance. For the more advanced players, controlling ball flight and distance control relies heavily on this skill.

Training

Here are some techniques that are golf specific. All these are performed with your eyes closed and standing on one leg.

If this is too difficult stand with both feet together with heels raised:

  1. One leg stance with one arm extensions
  2. Alternating Extended Arm Rotations
  3. Wrist rotations with extended arms
  4. Elbow rotations and bends
  5. Finger extension to finger and thumb press
  6. Touch hands behind head
  7. Touch hands behind back
  8. Ball throw from one hand to other
  9. Pass the ball around your body

Kinaesthetic awareness is a skill that can be developed like any other skill.

If you haven’t got it you probably haven’t learnt it.
