Tiger Heading for The Masters?

23/03/2008

When Tiger won the 1997 Masters by an unprecedented 12 shot victory the world acknowledged a unique golfing genius had stamped his presence on the history of the game.

Eleven years later, we are still witnessing an incredible athlete and performer who continues to improve and set new standards that others admire.

The power game is well and truly embedded into the modern game; however Tiger has more than just power to offer. Distance control through out his blistering iron play has undoubtedly raised the bar again. The observer is quick to suggest Tiger’s putting is on fire and at first glance this seems to be the case. Look closer and you will see more accurate iron play reducing the pressure of holing every putt knowing, there’s another birdie chance approaching.

Zach Johnson impressively played the back 9 last year like a true champion. Alterations to the course suggested that a power player would succeed, but yet again Augusta demanded more than just ‘smashing’ tee shots. Controlling shots into the greens was the key to victory and will be again this year. Quality ball control will reduce the immense pressure of putting on greens which present difficulties we can only imagine.

Tiger is now better prepared - his swing is less ‘open’ which caused him so much distance control problems in last years tournament. His power is well documented but his ability to control the ball is back to the form we witnessed eleven years ago.

Tiger’s hunting for his 5th green jacket, not only is he as focussed as ever, but this time he has his technique back to match his awesome skills.

The 2008 Masters offers new course changes; a 10yard extension to the front of the 1st tee allows for flexibility in the event of high winds. The 7th green has been raised by six feet on the left side to allow for an additional 2 to 3 pin positions. The right side of the 9th green has altered on the first and middle plateaus to soften the severity. Several trees have been removed form the 11th hole to enhance the viewing.

For the new players to the event performing on such a demanding golf course and in a tournament that holds enormous history will electrify even the most laid back of competitors. JB Holmes, Bubba Watson and Boo Weekly are first timers and will be awesome additions to this uniquely captivating tournament. They all possess the power to challenge, but have they got the craftsmanship skills of Mr Woods.
