Shanking Problems on Slopes
15/04/2008
Playing from sloping lies, especially a ball below the stance lie, can challenge even the most accomplished of players. Controlling your body movements at speed against the pull of gravity can create problems if your body balance is compromised.
Body balance enables your muscle engagement to remain stable throughout the movement of the golf swing. However, place your body in a 'stressed position' such as a awkward lie and any weak links will be exposed.
If your technique involves an adjustment of posture on the backswing and a recovery on the downswing, then a lack of muscular balance will result in an errant shot.
With a ball below the stance lie, it is very easy to lower yourself closer to the ball on the backswing. This increases the tension on your hip flexors. If there is any weakness in your glutes (your ass) then recovery is not possible from your mid body. You are now reliant on your arms and hands to readjust your distance to the ball. Any powering of the shot will cause arm extension and a shank is inevitable.
